Alebrijes are brightly colored Mexican folk toys depicting fantastic beasts. They were first made in Mexico City in 1936. The first Alebrijes, as well as the use of the term, are created by Pedro Linares. In the 1930s, Linares became very ill and, lying unconscious in bed, dreams of a strange place reminiscent of a forest. There he sees trees, animals, rocks, clouds, which suddenly turn into something strange, into some kind of animal, but unknown. He sees a donkey with butterfly wings, a rooster with the horns of a bull, a lion with the head of an eagle, and they all shout the word Alebrijes. Having recovered, he begins to recreate the creatures he saw from cardboard and papier-mâché and call them alebridges.
